About Astor Markhor :

The Astor Markhor, a magnificent subspecies of the markhor, is a native wild goat that roams the rugged mountainous regions of Central Asia. Specifically, it thrives in the Astor Valley, nestled in the breathtaking Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. What sets the Astor Markhor apart is its strikingly beautiful spiral horns, which can grow up to an impressive three feet in length for males, making it an emblematic symbol of the region’s natural heritage.

Regrettably, the Astor Markhor faces a critical threat as it is currently listed as an endangered species. The population of these majestic creatures has dwindled to just a few hundred individuals in the wild. Their decline is primarily attributed to habitat loss, where human encroachment and infrastructure development have encumbered their natural habitat. Additionally, factors such as hunting activities and competition for resources with domestic livestock further compound the challenges they face. The survival of the Astor Markhor is at a precarious juncture, demanding urgent conservation efforts.
